I knew we had a winner when I watched my kids read the book and blushingly hand it to me saying "Mommy....you're going to love this!"

Oh did I love it.

When I Am a Mommy written by Dishy Schiffman & illustrated by Rivka Engel (Israel Bookshop)pretty much tells the story of many conversations in this house.... "When I am a Mommy I am never going to make my kids..." fill in the blanks.

Kayla, is quite an expressive character and anytime her Mommy tells her to take a bath/go to school/eat dinner or any other "unreasonable" thing, she launches into "When I am a Mommy..." chorus.

To which her mother (my new mentor!) responds "Wow. Your kids will be so lucky."

And Kayla smugly says "I know."

Uhhhhh lucky? Chinuch anyone?

The conversation continues " Yes, your kids will never have to take a bath or brush their teeth. They will also have dirty skin and rotten teeth and smell so yucky their friends won't want to go near them. But they will be so lucky."

Ha! How many of you are cheering at your screens?

Of course the story ends with a feel-good vibe as Kayla finally realizes how wise her mother is and tells her mother that "When I am a mommy...I am going to be just like you."

In addition to the brilliance of the dialogue, the simplicity of the book makes it a winner. Simple language. Age appropriate illustrations. No shtick.

I selected some random kids in the neighborhood and did a public reading. It hit home with the 5-9 age group best but was pretty understandable to even 4 year olds. And if you don't tell anyone...the teens smirked when I wasn't looking.
